while traveling through the woods i came across alot of glass bottles, i collected a few.

When i got back i peeled off the labels and did a little experiment trying to funnel white emolsion into them how ever this did not work so instead i got some white acrylics and mix them with the smallest bit of water i swirled the mixture around and it turned the inside of the bottle white i did this with a couple colours the colours that came out looked simular to the colours on the "sea side ice cream" sign so i have decided to create some signs with diffrent flouvered ice creams on directing you to the sea side ice cream pallas

These pictures are from the woods where i plan to place my signs.

This photo shows the urbanisation around the ridge and how it has become so built up this is a small narrow bit of wood between several different housing areas.

Current sign posts in Wood House ridge, They are very plain and pretty standard as to fit in with the surroundings and direct.

This is why i feel it would be interesting to create something that plays on the idea of the woods.
I really like the idea of looking at the modern day picnic and how people no longer go to the woods to have a picnic.

The main places i have looked at are in the hyde park, Woodhouse and Headingely areas.

Distances between restraunts and Woodhouse Ridge/ Batty woods:

Today i have cycled from various restraunts, pubs and bars to batty woods measuring the distance with an iphone app call map my journey, i have taken the distances and converted them into walking distances. I like the idea of measuring exercise in time.

The Libarary pub is 0.6 mi and a 12 minute walk

Oranaise morrocon restraint is 0.4mi a 9 minute walk

Seaside ice cream parlour- 0.6mi 12minute walk traditional seaside font and large picture of a ice cream

Crispy Fish and chips - 0.5mi 10 minute walk picture of a fish with the Fair ground seaside writing writting on it?

Bankok cafe- 0.5 mi 10 minute walk- More graphiti type font base, Thai food thai menu

LS6 cafe/The Clock Cafe- 0.5mi 10 minute walk- Colourful, furiniture, white font on black back ground, take the colours from the furniture s a background and put the white ls6 writing in bottom corner?

Hyde Park pub - 0.4 mi 9 minute walk -standard pub type fonts, chalk board fonts- pints

After speaking to Andy in ceramic today it would appear throwing a plate is a lot harder than it looks. Also Due to it being closer and closer to dead lines Andy said its not too likely that the kiln will be free. Especially for lazer tran as you need to have a slow long change in temperature.
He has got a cheaper version that you don't need a kiln for and can be printed onto inject printer.
How ever this mean i will not get to use the process i originally wanted but its an easier way to get the same outcome.
I plan to buy some plates.

MASH SIGN POST

M*A*S*H was a media franchise, Semi Biographical of Richard Hocker. Its loosely based on a mobile army service hospital in the Korean war. I found this image taken from the set of the tv show and really like the collaboration of different fonts directions and distances. Its simple but effective. I've seen a few sign posts like this and would be interested to see more. Its what my ideas for this project would be based on.
Expo.02 in Sweden

Expo.02 was the 6th Swiss national exposition, which was held from 15 May to 20 October 2002. The exposition took place around the lakes of NeuchâtelBienne/Biel and Morat/Murten. It was divided into five sites, which were called Arteplages, due to the proximity of the water (some sites were actually partially or totally built on the water). The five Arteplages were located in NeuchâtelYverdon-les-BainsMorat/MurtenBiel/Bienne and on a mobile barge traveling from one site to another. The barge represented the canton of Jura, which does not have access to any one of the three lakes.

The colours of expo2. were red, black and white and the signposting was made to reflect this.
Lu Zhang illustrated some drawings for the exhibition to be put onto the sign posts to reflect everyday Swedish life. The font "syntax" was used as it was the font for Expo.02

I like the idea of taking the fonts and type faces of different places that are reflected in the signs. I also like how he has a style of illustration he has used as well.
The signs go against the universal symbol system. each sign is indepent and illustrated depending on its context and accompanied by multilingual text. The arrows are drawn by hand to match the illustrations.

Sign research:
for my work i want to take the idea of signage from an urban enviroment and place it with in a woodland area, I found that the areas surrounding the long narrow stretch of woodland were completely urbanised and made the woodland seem invisible. In my mind its an interesting contrast between the woodland and the outside environment. I find it to be slightly ironic, I like the idea of the traditional  picnic in the woods and how these signs wood play on how traditions such as this have been lost due to urbanisation of areas surrounding natural environments.

In urban environments signage should be:

Colour-
Any colours can work but contrast between font and background should be at least 60% due to people with colour blindness

Typeface-
Letters should be at least 3inches wide and 4inches in height.
Helvetica,Clear view and Garamond  are the most common font in urban environments as its easier to read for the elderly and short of sight and varying driving speeds. (i do not find this as relevant as no cars go through the woods and my deign should be aimed at human traffic)

Symbols and Logos- internationally recognised symbols are best and should be distinctive

Pedestrian signs-Simplicity is still important to cut through the urban clutter

Fabrication- way finding signs are furniture and have a similar impact on a pedestrian environment as waste paper baskets and trash receptacles. These signs must be pleasant on the eye and cause no harm or offence to passes by.

The Hollywood shadow Project, Cameron Mcnall

These are still movie images created in giant brass and honeycomb sculptures through out hollywood. The places that the sculptures are in are to cast shadows over local business's and buildings that have relevance to the movie and where they were created.
The signage and classic holly wood look of the text and images looks right in place as its where it was created.

Peter Anderson- Poles of influences,St. Lucia Muesem of contempory art, Poles used every where in st lucia as washing lines, to get bananas from trees and everyday living. The numbers on each pole around the island related to everything from ex girlfriends phone numbers to his car registration. made them as co ordonates for the island.

I like how the bold colours reflect the surroundings of the Caribbean and how they work as a collective and individually. Conceptual the piece is interesting as it part of his personality being scattered around the island and allows the people of st lucia to create new stories with these poles.

Things todo:

Artist research, Sign posting

Measure distances in the woods

Buy Plates
Create designs For Plates/Posters/Bottles

Look at the texts and designs for local food layouts

After speaking to cheryl today i relised that i wasn't fully emerged in the project currently and it was making me have doubts about the course because im not really embracing what i want to do. i decided to come up with some sort of concept i could engage my self in more.

Based on the woods.
Walking in the Woods.
Sign Posts within wooded areas.

Picnics within the woods.

Picnics evolved from the elaborate traditions of outdoor feasts enjoyed by the wealthy. Medieval hunting feasts and Renaissance era country banquets can be credited with laying the foundation of the outdoor dining experiences we enjoy today. The history of picnicking is credited to the Europeans, and nowadays people all around the world enjoying participating in these leisurely outings.
In Europe during the 14th century, the earliest picnics were medieval hunting feasts in England. These feasts before the hunt began were of special importance and the main foods that could be found at these feasts would be hams, baked meats and pastries.

I like the idea of what the modern day picnic, the rich these days now eat in restraints.

Cultural look at how advertising and signposting has a control on society.
we give directions by recognisable places such a food places and shops. big brands of what we know.
Look at how each fast food place is sign posted/labelled.
Brings sites from outside the woods into the woods through using the directions as advertising?

Jog different distances to see how far each one is apart.( could work our calories of walking the distance to the shop for what you can eat when your there)
We have a direct corellation of what we eat to how much excerise we need to burn it in a modern society.

“if you jog to café 164 from here, you can eat a baguette”

Site specific, Yorkshire fish and chip shops. In the area.
New cultural student foods.
Look at the diffrent food places around the woods, what they reflect about the surrounding areas.

Colaborate with graphic design students.
give them ideas and work with them to create new signs for my plates.

Create 6 plates in ceramics, throw a plate?
Glaze 6 plates.
How to Through a plate- my new challenge
think of what materials to use, i like using stoneware clay as i find it easier to use and it is more durable to out door weather.

Once glazed use LAZER TRAN to print 6 different designs.
Ask if white will show up on a colour glaze. may effect the diffrent designs on lazer train paper.

Attach a rope harnis, Hang\nail to trees in the woods.(super glue rope to signs)
put a whole through the top of each individual plate.

ALTERNATIVE SIGNPOSTS FOR LOCAL FOODIES.

Another idea would be to collect glass bottles and make labels on laser tran with directions

I Like the I dea of fish. fish plates Camilla Hawkins

I like the idea of bold colours. LAZERTRAN, ideal home show

..and i could use the same idea on glass bottles

I feel that lazer tran just made ceramics more interesting.

PPP

For our PPP we have been asked to help a third year too set up there exhibition, I have decided to help April to set up her final piece. Her final piece relates to the Williamson Tunnels in Liverpool where shes from. She has bought back a tunn of rocks from the tunnels and plans to suspend the rock from the ceiling, She is also documenting all the rocks like artefacts. I have been helping her by documenting all her rocks by attaching labels too them that will later be numbered.

Rock fun.

BIG ROCK + 50 ROCK.
Over the past week I have been practising throwing cylinders, and with a few tutorials from Andy and Ed i have finally mastered centering. However as i have been practising cylinders i had just been really getting into the process and cutting them open to learn my mistakes so i feel like i dont have much to show for it other than a new process i can use.  However I have also moved onto using stoneware, stoneware is much more smooth material to use and i feel i can work it a lot better. I am starting to get a bit concerned that by the time i get round to firing and glazing pieces that the kiln maybe in use as its also third year fine art hand in over the next few weeks. So it may limit my access to the kiln. I feel i should be more designing for my work for my sketch book along with my work so i have more work to show as long as gaining skills.

Im currently thinking im going to have to rethink my project, maybe take it in another direction as i feel i am currently learning skills that i personally cant put into a context of a space that truly interests me.

Today was by far one of the most productive days.
Turning-I turned 3 bowls one of which are very fond of and has 2 strips in the middle which I turned. I wrecked my plate bolide created add a problem where was not attached to the will properly and it flew off and cut half of it in half, I have now learned my lesson and all bowls must be firmly attached to the wheel before turning it on, I also must not put so much pressure on the tool. This destruction of one of the bottles gave me a chance to practice some spiralling grading by gently moving the tool up and down bowl as the wheels spinning. This created an unpractical decorative peace. I had an interesting discussion with a third-year fine art student and we decided the chair to be delicate with pottery and that we were both heavy-handed so had to be extra hard. Unfortunately this discussion came after glazing my bowls.
Glazing- I decide to go with the 2 coloured Tip Glace, this was inspired by my designs I used turquoise, Black and white.
step 2-mixer glaze with hands or a state. The grazers I used was solid at the bottom and I really had to go at them with my hands to mix it all together. I noticed that the glazes were not the same colours as they were after they had been fired. The turquoise was an orange, the black light grey and the white was just like. The heat on the  glaze when it is fired melts and become shiny.
Step 3-when dipping the bowl you have to be extra careful to not touch the great too much the more you touch the glaze the more of the Glazer comes off, it is best to leave the object you're glazing in for 3 seconds then to put out again.
Step 4-leave to dry
step 5-when touch dry, touching as little as the bowl as possible to the other half in to get the 2 different colours. Touch up the ball very lightly to get rid of any drips it is very delicate, and a fingertip is almost like sandpaper to the grace to be very gentle.
Step 6- pick up the bold carefully and get a clean damp sponge and wipe the bottom of the pile to it is the colour of the clay.
Step 7-Fire glaze in the kill

The heavier the fear of glaze the darker in colour and the more covered it will be when it melts.

I wasn't too careful with my glazes as it went into the kiln looking a bit messy file will know that the next time to be more careful. You can be relevant experimental leisure Niger what they're going to come out looking like. I'm excited to see my outcome.
